On the border of the Oude Noorden and Crooswijk, Gerard Heineken opened Heineken's Brewery Company in 1873, which would grow into a massive industrial complex.

In 1885, Heineken established the first company laboratory ever for a brewery. Less than a year later, the A-yeast was discovered in the lab, still the standard for the company's beer.
